A Convicting Revelation
On a frigid night in Beaver Creek, Colorado, I woke up in the middle of the night stirred by a vivid thought. I pictured myself riding in a car driven by someone who’d been drinking, swerving dangerously. They hit a pedestrian and kept driving. The twist? The car was one I’d rented to them, knowing their reckless driving habits. Was I complicit in the harm caused? This analogy felt like a divine nudge to reflect on whether how we invest our money matters. Does God care about where and how we invest?
In the weeks that followed, I reflected on these internal questions:
- If I own shares in a company, am I endorsing its actions?
- Am I comfortable profiting from companies that harm the vulnerable, like those promoting addictive substances or exploiting workers?
- Do my investments reflect the values I hold, or are they silently endorsing practices I’d never support in my daily life?
- What does it say about my faith if my investments cause outcomes that contradict God’s call to protect the helpless (Psalms 12:5) or live distinctly as His family (2 Corinthians 6:17-18)?
Asking these questions was uncomfortable, but they reveal a convicting truth: our investments are not neutral. Every dollar we invest is a vote for the kind of world we want. As stewards of God’s resources, what we do with our money matters deeply to Him and to the world we help shape.
These questions led me to dive deeply into scripture, where passages like Exodus 21:22-25 (protecting the unborn), Psalms 12:5 (defending the helpless), and Romans 14:11-12 (accountability) confirmed that God cares deeply about how we invest. Our portfolios should reflect our adoption into His family (2 Corinthians 6:17-18) and His guidance (Psalms 3:24).
Faith-Driven and Values-Based Investing
The core issue many face is unknowingly investing in companies that conflict with their values, profiting from products or practices they morally oppose. This creates a painful disconnect: their money supports causes they’d never endorse, leaving them feeling complicit in harm and misaligned with their faith or ethics.
